Bradenton Florida
Manatee County Florida Real
Estate & Information
Located south of
Tampa Bay, Bradenton is on the Manatee River. Bradenton was thought of
as a "blue-collar" town, with Sarasota to the south being the
cultural capital of the area. However, that image is changing. Bradenton is a
mix of old town, beach front property and new construction in Manatee
County. Bradenton real estate is increasing every month.
New Homes in Bradenton Florida
Manatee County
offers several new communities, including Lakewood
Ranch, a planned, upscale, quiet secluded paradise. As a
master planned community, there are many nature areas, lakes, single
family homes, condos and gated neighborhoods.
Here you can enjoy a round of golf on two semi-private courses, use the
club house facilities, fish in the lakes, walk, bike or skate many miles of un-crowded
streets.
Anna Maria Island, Manatee County Fl
To the west of
Bradenton, across the Intracoastal Waterway is beautiful Anna Maria Island,
offering white sandy
un-crowded beaches and picture perfect sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico.
Anna Maria has a casual Florida village atmosphere with a laid-back
lifestyle. Bradenton
Beach and Holmes Beach are located on central and southern Anna Maria
Island. There are a few
older beach motels, condominiums and even some beach cottages that have
years of history associated with them.
Longboat Key, West of
Bradenton and Sarasota
To the south of
Anna Maria is Longboat Key. You will find many condos and resorts, as
well as single family homes and gated communities. Golf courses and
excellent restaurants are plentiful on Longboat Key. On both islands,
the beaches are
refreshingly natural, with protected wild sea oats and mangroves
providing a protective habitat for the scores of native island birds
that share the island, as well as the dolphins, manatees and other
aquatic wildlife living just offshore.
The Manatee
River crosses through Manatee County, separating Palmetto and Ellenton
on the north side from Bradenton on the south. Longboat Key, the
next barrier island south, is popular with shell hunters along its
beaches.

Bradenton Florida History
In 1539
Hernando DeSoto, the Spanish conqueror landed at the current site of
DeSoto National Memorial, at the mouth of the Manatee River and began
his 4000 mile search for El Dorado, the lost city of gold. He
passed on, leaving large settlements of native Americans as the only
inhabitants of the gulf coast. The first Bradenton area settler was Josiah Gates,
who came for the offer of free land from the United States
government, after the Florida Territories were accepted as part of the
United States. Also in the mid-1800's, Joseph Braden arrived, a sugar planter for whom the city was named.
By 1855, sugar plantations lined the river and homesteaders started the
town of Manatee, also naming the new county Manatee. A small frame courthouse that dates from
1860 and governed the county is now a part of the Manatee Village Historical
Park. The arrival of the railroad boomed the port town. The area today remains a center of agriculture featuring tomatoes, cut flowers and home of
Tropicana, the world's largest juice producer.
